Those diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome often carry feelings of helplessness and despair. This diagnosis, although definitive, carries no sure-fire cure. With that said, there are plenty of therapies, medications and coping techniques a person with CFS can utilize for symptom control and maintenance.

Get Control – It has been said the best defense is a great offense. Chronic health problems are often taxing on the sufferer, both mentally and physically. Your best defense is to get control of yourself and your body. Don’t allow a defeatist attitude and continue on with your search for treatment. Be relentless in finding a way to manage your symptoms associated with CFS.

Simple is Sometimes Better – You don’t always need a complicated plan of treatment to get the job done. Every person affected by CFS has a different symptom list, therefore not all treatment methods are effective for everyone. If you’ve tried prescribed medication after medication and you aren’t finding relief, go another route. Don’t limit yourself to conventional medicine. Look outside the box and do research about your diagnosis. Finding and using alternative therapies just may pull you out of that funk and get your motor running again. You can ask your primary care physician or immunologist about natural and herbal remedy suggestions instead of pumping antibiotics and pain pills into your body. Consult an herbalist or chiropractor. Don’t be afraid to visit a psychologist or psychiatrist for additional coping skills.

Pay Attention and Take Notes – Patient’s dealing with chronic fatigue rarely find a day without symptoms. It’s important to watch your symptoms, their duration and any reaction to various therapies. It’s hard to keep everything all in your head. Jot down a log of daily symptoms, what treatment method you’ve used and if you noticed any relief. Later, you can look back and see the more powerful therapies for a particularly tough day.

Be Assertive – If you’ve been going to the same doctor for months or even years regarding chronic fatigue syndrome and you still feel like you are at square one, try another physician. As a patient you have the right to a second or even third opinion. You have the right to request a specialist get involved in your care. You have the control…use it!
Be in Motion – This one sounds impossible at first, but it’s important to get that body moving. Those dealing with CFS often have trouble getting out of bed, let alone getting some exercise. An exercise regimen increases blood flow and circulation, strengthens and tones your body, increases energy and gives a person a powerful feeling. When your mind feels better, your body will follow!

Persons struggling with symptoms related to CFS, it’s important to realize and embrace the fact that this body of theirs needs repair… needs treatment… needs to get back to a happy and functional lifestyle. Empower yourself with the keys for success, and don’t let anyone tell you there is nothing you can do.
