How to Deal With Adult Bed Wetting

It is perfectly normal for very young children to wet their beds at night, but adults wetting the bed is not a commonly accepted practice. Not only is it extremely embarrassing for the person, but it can also be very inconvenient. However, this is not just something that can easily be controlled. In fact, it is a real medical sleep disorder that requires proper treatment.

The first step towards stopping adult bedwetting is to identify the cause of the problem. You have to figure out why you are constantly urinating in your sleep. When there is a need to urinate at night, a normal, healthy person would wake up by instinct and go to the bathroom.

Adult Bed Wetting Causes

If you don’t wake up and just keep sleeping, it may be because of either of the following reasons:

  • The onset of old age – The body’s movements and reflexes slow down as we get older. We may no longer be able to run like we used to, we may not remember things so easily, and we may not have as much control over our bladder as before.
  • Too much stress – It is quite common for adults wetting the bed when going through high-stress periods of their life. The best way to prevent this is do breathing exercises, listen to soothing music and participate in sports.
  • Caffeine – Coffee, soda, tea and other high-caffeine beverages can increase urine production so if you drink these before going to sleep, you just might be guilty of adult bedwetting during the night.
  • Alcohol – Also, alcohol can weaken bladder control so it’s best to avoid these at night, as this is a one common cause for adults wetting the bed. Fluids can’t stay in the body for too long so if you drink too much before bedtime, you will be more likely to let it out while you are sleeping.
  • Medications – Adult bedwetting can be a side effect of taking certain medications, like those used by people with kidney disorders. As these drugs are necessary, the only thing you can do is wear a diaper at night so that you won’t wet the bed.
  • ADH Imbalance – Anti-diuretic hormone or ADH is produced naturally by the body to regulate the urination process. A lack of this hormone would result in adult bedwetting.
  • UTI – A fairly common problem especially among women, urinary tract infections is also one of the possible causes of nocturnal enuresis accidents.

The best way to prevent adults wetting the bed is to first obviously, go to the bathroom shortly before settling for the night. Next, you should do pelvic exercises that will tighten your pelvic muscles and give you better control over your bladder.

If the drugs you are taking are causing you to wet the bed, ask your doctor if you can take them in the morning instead of at bedtime. Instead of being embarrassed by your problem and avoiding relationships, find a solution that works for you. There are ways to stop an adult bedwetting problem, so you do not have to just put up with it, you can do something about it.
