The medical name for talking in your sleep is Somniloquy and it is extremely common for people to engage in. Some people talk in their sleep occasionally while others do it all the time. It can be funny to hear your spouse talking in their sleep about something at work and you simply assume that is what they are dreaming about. Even small children can talk in their sleep and parents will think they are calling out for them in the night.

Most people don’t remember talking in their sleep at all when someone else asks them about it. This process can occur with their eyes closed and you know they are still asleep. Some people sit up in bed though and have their eyes wide open. This gives those around them the impression that they are awake but this isn’t necessarily the case.

Somniloquy is considered to be a form of sleep disorder. In many cases it is nothing to be concerned about. However, it can be a symptom of more serious sleep disorders including sleepwalking, sleep eating, and night terrors. Most individuals with a mild case of sleep talking will recover from it on their own. Statistically, more that half of all children will talk in their sleep at some point. Less than 5% of all adults have an ongoing problem with sleep talking.

Some people try to pry information out of others while they are talking in their sleep. This information isn’t reliable though so don’t ask if they are having an affair or other serious types of questions. You never know what the individual is experiencing internally during the sleep talking process. Most researchers don’t believe that sleep talking is the result of suppressed information being brought out by the subconscious.

Some individuals are very curious about their sleep talking though. They even buy expensive recording devices to place by their bed at night. These devices are sound activated so they only turn on when the person starts to talk in their sleep. Many people have been quite surprised to play back that information the next morning. It can be nothing more than muttering, a complete conversation, and even lines to a movie or a famous speech.
