Childhood insomnia can be a very tough experience to go through not only for the child but also for their parents. Most people know that in adult insomnia, stress is likely to be the culprit. In children however, insomnia can occur due to a variety of other factors.

Common Causes of Childhood Insomnia

One of the most frequently cited reasons for the development of insomnia in children is the lack of a regular sleeping schedule. When a child sleeps at different times every night, his body’s internal body clock does not recognize when it is time to go to sleep, resulting in difficulty in falling asleep.

Another common cause of childhood insomnia is sleep onset association disorder. This is a condition that develops when a child is detached from someone or something that he associates with sleeping. It may be an object like a stuffed toy or a favorite pillow, or an activity such as listening to a bedtime story or watching TV.

There are actually a few very good remedies for childhood insomnia but before any treatment can be started, you first have to realize that your child is indeed suffering from insomnia. Unfortunately, this can sometimes be very hard. Unless your child is old enough to let you know of his sleeping problems, it is possible that the disorder won’t be discovered until later in your child’s life.

Once diagnosed, childhood insomnia can be cured with simple changes like creating a regular bedtime routine. For more extreme cases, hypnosis can also be done. Oral medication is not really recommended for children due to their addictive properties.

If a child is not given adequate support and treatment during the times that he is suffering from insomnia, this condition can trigger a lot of long-term side effects that the child will suffer until adulthood. It’s even possible that his insomnia will stay on as a permanent part of his grownup life, making him dependent on sleeping medications just to be able to get a good night’s rest.

You can help your child avoid having to deal with such inconvenience by being observant of his sleeping behavior and getting in touch with his pediatrician as soon as you notice that something is off. With vigilance and dedication, you can play a huge role in preventing childhood insomnia from developing in your child.
