Depression and insomnia are two very different conditions, both of which are experienced by millions of people all over the world. But despite the vast differences in these disorders, studies have shown that depression and insomnia can actually be linked in more ways than one.

Insomnia Can Cause Depression

Insomnia is generally defined as the inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep during the night. It can be caused by a number of factors, such as stress, irregular sleep patterns and the intake of certain medications. It can also be the result of having too many problems at work, at home or in one’s personal relationships.

When a person is unable to get the required number of hours of sleep night after night, their daily routines are sure to be eventually affected. They will show a diminished performance level at work, extreme changes in appetite, moodiness, constant fatigue, memory loss and shorter attention span. When left untreated for a long time, this will gradually deteriorate into full-blown depression and anxiety.

When a person is already depressed, they may lie awake in bed night after night, unable to get sufficient hours of sleep. This will then cause them to suffer chronic insomnia, starting the cycle all over again. For this reason, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly which has caused which, especially if the condition is not diagnosed early.

To identify depression, some of the common symptoms you should look for are unexplained sadness, sporadic mood swings and frequent crying. Suicidal tendencies are not as common but are also possible.

While these do come with fewer side effects, the duration of treatment may take a bit longer.
