If you notice that you cannot work for the number of hours you used to, or if the toll of doing shift work is finally starting to have an effect your health, you could be experiencing shift work sleep disorder or SWSD. This complaint may mean that you are increasingly sleepy through the day but unable to sleep while fighting the urge to sleep on the job when working the night shift. Here are some things that you can do in order to treat the symptoms.

The most obvious remedy is to try to modify your work schedule to hours that are more sociable. By working at night, you are upsetting your body’s inner clock, termed the circadian rhythm, which regulates itself with the rising and setting of the sun to know when it is time to wake and sleep respectively. Shift work pushes your body into an abnormal state of working when it should be asleep and sleeping when it would normally be awake. This is the reason that you feel drowsy during the night and then are unable to drop off during the day although you are very tired. Consequently, if feasible, it is in your best interests to have a chat with your work supervisor to see if shift changes can be made.

Here are some sleep strategies for shift workers that you may like to try. If you are unable to change your working schedule, there are other actions you can take to minimize the effects on your body. When you are working, avoid drinking the likes of tea, coffee and other caffeinated beverages to keep yourself awake. Although the caffeine can work as a stimulus to some people, the effects are short lived and you will likely feel even more tired and groggy after the original buzz has worn off. Caffeine in addition dries out the respiratory tracts, which could lead to sleep apnea syndrome and snoring when you eventually try getting some shut eye. As an alternative, try to drink natural fruit juices or even plain water. In addition, ask your doctor about any natural supplements you could take while working to keep yourself alert.

Shift work sleep disorder may additionally mean that you are sleepy-eyed during the day, even if you use this time for relaxation before your shift. If you have narcolepsy, which is thought to be caused by the brains inability to adjust to normal sleep wake cycles, you may find that you are doing things without remembering, or having vivid dreams while you are not in sleep mode. Your body may also be in a slight state of paralysis when you are trying to waken, which is an indicator that shift work sleep disorder may be your problem.

Maintaining a record of your work schedules and sleep patterns is usually adequate information for your physician to make a correct diagnosis. Nevertheless, for ongoing sleep issues or if an underlying sleep disorder is suspected, you might be required to maintain a sleep diary in which you maintain a record of your sleeping habits. You should also try to keep a regular sleep schedule, even on your days off or at weekends. If you believe they may be helpful, ask your doctor about medications like Ritalin or Melotonin. It is crucial that you do not try and self diagnose your problem as it might be something more than a shift work sleep disorder.

Today’s use of traditional Chinese medicine brings together thousands of years of medical practice in China that includes using Chinese medicine to cure insomnia naturally. The term ‘traditional Chinese medicine’ is a reasonably new term which was first used by the People’s Republic of China during the 1950s at a time when the country was trying to create a substantial export trade for its time honored medicines and medical practices.

Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine does not merely cover medicinal products, but also includes such things as herbal preparations and a range of practices including acupuncture and massage. The foundation of Chinese medicine is that the body functions because of a number of interrelated processes which are in constant interaction with the environment around us. While these processes stay in balance you are healthy but, if these processes are out of balance, then your health will suffer.

There are a number of different philosophies which govern the practice of Chinese medicine including things like the theory of Yin-Yang which examines the role of the five elements (fire, water, earth, wood and metal), energy flow through the meridians of the body and the relationships between the organs of the body that are described in the theory of Zang-Fu.

For many years there has been considerable conflict between those people who believe in traditional Chinese medical practices and those people who believe in the science-based practice of Western medicine. Now however Chinese medicine, together with other types of Oriental and Asian medicine, is increasingly being accepted in the West and we often refer to these practices as alternative medicine.

For the many millions of sufferers herbal remedies have long proved to be effective in curing insomnia, or in relieving the symptoms of insomnia, and such things as chamomile, lavender, passion flower and lemon balm are well known for their medicinal properties. There cannot be many insomniacs who have not taken a hot drink of lemon and honey before going to bed.

An increasing number of people are also using acupuncture or, for those people who do not fancy the though of needles, acupressure. Both of these arts have been practiced for many hundreds of years and the principles were born out of the traditional Chinese practice of adjusting energy levels in the body by controlling its flow along the meridian lines of the body.

In spite of its growing acceptance there are still many people who are distrustful of Chinese medicine. However anyone who has experienced it in action, especially those people who have been fortunate enough to live in the Far East, will be more than happy attest to its effectiveness.

If you suffer from insomnia then Chinese medicine is one route which you should consider seriously and a good place to start is with a simple herbal remedy for insomnia.

It has been felt for some time now that too little or low quality sleep in teens results in poor grades at school, however it was not until fairly recently that a study confirmed that teenagers with poor sleeping habits do indeed suffer from lower grades.

Here are 10 simple tips to make sure that a healthy child does not suffer from sleep problems and can get the level of sleep needed to perform well in school.

1. Set a regular time to go to bed and do not vary this time by more than a matter of a few minutes from one day to the next.

2. Ensure that you get up at the same time each morning, regardless of whether or not it is a school day. Teenagers commonly get up late at the weekends and throughout the school holidays and, instead of making you feel better, this merely disrupts your pattern of sleep.

3. Should you find that you are unable to fall asleep within say 15 minutes of climbing into bed then do not merely lie in bed trying to get to sleep, because the harder you try the more difficult it will become. As an alternative, get up and do something like listening to some relaxing music or reading a book. As soon as you start to feel tired, climb back into bed and you will be asleep in next to no time.

4. Avoid the temptation to stay up late doing your homework or getting ready for a test. Although this might seem like the solution to a particular problem in the short term, and may well keep you out of trouble for turning your homework in late or get you through a test, in the long term your performance will drop and any shorter term gain will soon disappear.

5. Avoid the temptation to take a nap after school. If you do find that you are so tired you are unable to keep your eyes open then go ahead and take a nap but limit it to no more than 45 minutes or an hour.

6. Avoid any type of drink that contains caffeine after 3 o’clock in the afternoon. This of course means coffee and tea, but also includes colas and chocolate drinks.

7. Do not have a heavy meal close to bedtime. You obviously do not want to go to bed feeling hungry and taking a light snack before bedtime is fine, but going to bed on a full stomach will make it difficult to fall asleep and affect your quality of sleep.

8. Although teenagers will sometimes spend a lot of time in their bedroom turning it into more of a ‘living’ than a ’sleeping’ room, avoid the temptation to use the bed for anything other than sleeping. Do not sit in bed reading, writing, playing games, watching TV or anything else but keep it solely for sleeping so that your body associates climbing into bed with going to sleep.

9. Avoid vigorous exercise within several hours of bedtime. If you want to play soccer or engage in other sporting or strenuous activities then do these shortly after school and not an hour or two before you go to bed.

10. At bedtime make sure that your bedroom is dark, quiet and cool. Do not shut your bedroom up, turn up the heat and get into bed to watch TV. Rather, lower the heat, open the window a little if possible to let in some fresh air and make the room as dark as possible.

Follow these 10 tips and within next to no time your quality of sleep will improve, you will feel more awake and active throughout the day and your school grades will be on the up.

Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Do you frequently find yourself waking up several times during the night for no apparent reason? Does this lack of sleep leave you tired and sluggish all day long causing your work and personal lives to suffer? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it might be time to visit a sleep disorder clinic. Sleep disorders affect many people so the important thing to realize is that you’re not alone.

Finding an effective treatment of insomnia is very important especially if you have been losing sleep for more than a week. According to experts, losing a lot of sleep can weaken the immune system of our bodies. Once the defense system of our body is weakened, we become prone to different types of illnesses.

One of the most highly recommended sleep disorder treatments is simple relaxation. According to experts, the most common cause of insomnia is stress. A lot of people who are hyperactive during the day and those who are dealing with some personal problems are often too keyed-up to sleep at night. As a result, these people lie awake in bed through the wee hours of the morning. Some of them fall into a fitful sleep and they often wake up several times in the night. Either way, the result is often the same. Not being able to sleep at all or fitfully sleeping through the night can make a person feel tired and drowsy during the day.

When picking out the type of treatment of insomnia, consider the effects of this treatment to your body. Do not just opt for a sleeping pill right away. Yes, taking that pill will be easier but that may not be the best that you can do. Always remember that treating a disorder with drugs is not always favorable. If you can find some natural ways to treat you insomnia, why not take that option instead? A natural treatment of insomnia does have a lot of advantages over those drugs. For one thing, natural treatment processes do not have side effects and they cost even lesser compared to those drugs.

Natural treatments of insomnia include simple and practical activities that you can do to help you relax before bedtime. A good example of a natural treatment for sleep disorder is a change in lifestyle. For instance, if you are fond of drinking coffee throughout the day and even before bedtime, cut back on that habit. Do not drink coffee or any other types of beverages that has caffeine in it at least three hours before bedtime. Note that caffeine in your blood will keep you awake longer so if you remove the source of caffeine in your blood hours before bedtime, you will have better chances of getting some sleep easily.

If you’re experiencing insomnia on a regular basis, you’re probably ready to give anything a try that might let you get to sleep. But before you get desperate, make certain you realize how each alternative works.

If a run of sleepless nights leads to drowsiness during the day, many people will decide to use a nonprescription treatment. You might get some relief from a sleep aid at first, but they won’t give you long term results because they don’t fix the problem.

Sleeping aids shouldn’t be considered a cure for insomnia. It might provide some relief initially, but you still need to figure out the cause of your sleep issues. In the long run, it’s not very healthy to be dependent on a pill to get a good night’s sleep.

Quite a number of people get addicted to the medication and find they can’t sleep without it. Other people experience unpleasant side effects, or they end up with complications because of the way it interacts with their prescriptions.

Nonprescription sleep aids work against insomnia by employing an antihistamine, which is a common treatment for allergies. Along with making you feel drowsy, they also help to guarantee that you stay asleep. Some people experience drowsiness the next day, which might interrupt your natural sleep cycle. Side effects could include constipation, dizziness, memory loss, blurred vision, and dry mouth. Once you are dependent on them, you’ll need ever greater dosages to feel the benefits.

The doctor might give you something more potent such as a non-benzodiazephine. This will rev up the normal chemical processes in your brain and encourage drowsiness. Using a sleeping aid for ongoing insomnia relief is generally safer than using over the counter remedies; but it can lead to dependencies.

Although it’s not that common anymore, if your insomnia is extreme, your doctor might give you a prescription for a tranquilizer. This will calm your nervous system and lead to sleepiness. This is a short term solution that could lead to feelings of grogginess the day after.

Your physician might think that the best treatment for you is a prescription for anti-anxiety or antidepressant meds that will act as a sedative. This isn’t unusual, and you don’t run the risk of developing an addiction like you do with some meds.

You might also consider using an herbal insomnia remedy if you prefer to steer clear of prescription alternatives and use natural products. Some herbs have a reputation for promoting sleep, like chamomile, which can be made into tea.

Valerian root, melatonin, and SAMe are other herbal alternatives you might try to treat your insomnia. Be sure you take the correct dosage, since too much of a good thing can sometimes lead to uninvited side effects.

Have you ever had a look at some of the anti snore devices that are available on the market and wondered how those strange products came to be invented? They were by no means deliberately intended as anti snore devices. A few, like the nasal strips sold for decongestion, have helped a number of people stop snoring by chance. But there are some which you know without a shadow of a doubt that they were created by a non-snorer who was required to live years in the same room as a snorer.

The Snore Ball

Many snorers are capable of stopping their snoring once they have rolled over on their sides. Once on their side and if they continue to snore, then they probably have sleep apnea and require doctors’ help. So, these are somewhat unkind anti snore devices created to forbid even the soundest sleeper from rolling over onto their backs. Perhaps the inventors were trying to impose just a bit of their unhappiness onto the snorers of the world.

One such anti snoring product is known as the Snore Ball. It came out in the early twentieth century. It is a hard little ball that is strapped to the small of your back. When you roll over onto your back, you immediately regret that you did and have no choice but roll over onto your side. Some stick to your pajamas while others come with their own straps.

The Sandler Pillow

Along a similar vein, the Sandler Pillow also makes it next to impossible for a sleeper to snore on his or her back. The pillow is named after inventor Peter Sandler. It is a tiny, long pillow too thin for the whole head.

Shock Therapy

The most drastic and downright dangerous of anti snore devices has to be the Snore Stopper. This is an anti snoring bracelet, which can be worn around the wrist. When you start to snore, it gives you a jolt of electricity, which wakes you up. The manufacturers claim that the sensation you feel from the Snore Stopper is no more painful than a “small pinch.” You can’t help but wonder how many chronic snorers receive this as a wedding anniversary present. (”Oh, honey, you REALLY shouldn’t have.”)

What’s even better is that there is also a Snore Stopper that is specifically for the tongue. It shocks the tongue whenever it presses against the back of the mouth. Bon appetit.

Although it has been known for a long time now that children who have sleep apnea frequently display poor scores on IQ tests (typically scoring an average of 85 against a score of 101 for children who are not suffering from sleep apnea) one thing which has not been known until very recently is that this is produced by chemical changes within the brain. This means that an otherwise clever kid could well produce a mediocre performance as a result of nothing more than a sleeping problem which, in almost all cases, can be treated quite easily.

In a recent study carried out at the Hopkin’s Children’s Centre in Baltimore, 31 children between the ages of 6 and 16 (19 of whom had been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea) were examined with a special type or magnetic resonance imager (MRI) and it was discovered that those children with sleep apnea showed significant changes in the hippocampus and right frontal cortex which are parts of the brain which are associated with learning and higher mental function.

This same study also discovered that these kids were suffering from altered levels of three brain chemicals which indicated brain damage. This change to the chemistry of the brain resulting from the presence of sleep apnea may or may not be lasting and, at this point, further studies are required to see whether or not this effect can be reversed.

Even if reversal is possible however and the brain chemistry and cognitive function can be normalized, kids who have sleep apnea are going to suffer learning problems as long as they have untreated sleep apnea and certainly cannot rewind time and recapture this period of learning.

Of course, parents should already be looking out for signs of sleep apnea in their children but this study clearly indicates that an early diagnosis and treatment of this sleep problem might have a considerable affect on your child’s success in later life.

The signs of sleep apnea include numerous pauses in breathing during sleep that often result in an arousal from sleep and tossing and turning in bed. Children might also display loud or labored breathing, snoring, gasping, coughing and, sometimes, bed wetting at an age when should generally have passed.

Parents can also see that a child is sleeping in an unusual position, perhaps with their bottom sticking up in the air and with their head tilted back in an effort to keep their airway clear.

In the majority of cases child sleep apnea can be effectively treated by removing the tonsils and adenoids, or excess tissue from the nose or the back of the throat. Additionally, a CPAP machine (or pediatric CPAP) may also be used to give the child an airflow delivered using a mask worn during sleep to keep the airway open.

In itself child sleep apnea is incapacitating for any child and the effect of night after night of poor quality sleep will take their toll on your child. However, when this is combined with an impairment of your child’s IQ, it is imperative that you act as soon as you can to get this condition diagnosed and treated.

If snoring really aggravates your sleeping partner then it may be time for you to consider surgery to prevent snoring. Surgery for some people is a radical method to resolve their snoring dilemma but for a number of people it is the only way to stop. There are quite a few types of surgeries that can be performed but not all of them have the same success and every surgery has its own pros and cons.

If you find yourself making noises at night then schedule an appointment with your doctor to check out your snoring problem especially if you have tried all the snoring prevention devices and over the counter remedies to no effect.

Surgery to prevent snoring works to widen the airways and relieve your breathing. One procedure that is used to prevent your snoring is Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. It is surgery that removes your tonsils, part of the soft palate and the uvula.

Surgery to prevent snoring using this procedure appears to be temporary. Only about half of the patients who have undergone treatment using this surgical procedure report any improvement after two years. Using this procedure to prevent snoring appears to be temporary. Others find that inside two years they have the same old problems once more with snoring.

Laser Procedures

There is a surgery to prevent snoring that uses lasers. Lasers are also used to vaporize parts of your soft palate with this surgical procedure. This procedure uses only local anesthetic compared to the general anesthetic used in the above procedure.

This is a recommended procedure if you have already had your tonsils removed. However you should be warned that it is not completely effective. Although many find their snoring was much better than before, many people who have undergone the procedure reported that their sleeping partners were still not happy with their snoring.

Palate Stiffening

Surgery to prevent snoring that involves stiffening the palate of the mouth is also performed. It is considered quite effective for many people, with a high rate of people finding relief in the long term. Though in the short term more than 90% of people are able to cure their snoring problems using this procedure. If you think that you could benefit from surgery to prevent snoring then you should talk to your doctor about having this procedure done. Although not completely effective it may help to reduce your snoring problems.

People often joke about snoring and there are people who do not take it very seriously.

On the other hand snoring at night may possibly be a sign of a sleeping disorder, or other serious illnesses. It can drive couples apart, as it creates tension in the bedroom when you are continually waking up your partner.

You can now purchase a large selection of over the counter snoring cures, but before you head to the pharmacy learn how to control you snoring with a few lifestyle changes. Looking at your habits before bedtime can help you understand why you are snoring and teach you how to control snoring.

Create A Healthy Lifestyle

Learn how to control snoring by having a healthy lifestyle. Has your snoring increased lately due to an increase in your weight? Did you know that the two are related? Obesity and being overweight in general can contribute to snoring. An excessive amount of throat tissue or floppy throat tissue leads to snoring. One way to beat this is by increasing your exercise. Losing weight can assist in managing your snoring.

Smoking is bad for you; learn how to control your snoring by trying to reduce or even quit your smoking habit. Smoking or even being exposed to second hand cigarette smoke, causes breathing problems. A lot of smokers experience lung and nasal congestion. This is further complicated by the fact that smoking relaxes the throat muscles, which can results in snoring. Giving up smoking will help control snoring as well as improve your overall health.

Looking at things such as excessive alcohol will also show you how to control snoring. Before bedtime avoid alcohol. If you have to drink alcohol before you sleep limit yourself to one or two drinks at most. You will find that cutting down on alcohol helps to prevent snoring.

If you have trouble getting to sleep and take sleeping pills then this could be another reason that you are snoring. Sleeping pills also sedate the muscles in the throat making them go lax and eventually you will start snoring. The way that you sleep cans also help control snoring. Lying on your back will encourage snoring while lying on your side will help prevent snoring.

It can be difficult to sleep on your side if you have been sleeping on your back for a long time. One way to train yourself to sleep on your side is to place a tennis ball in a sock and pin it to the back of your pajamas. This way whenever you sleep on your back you will be prevented from doing so and slowly you will start sleeping on your side.
