How To Help Your Teenager Get Better Sleep
Are you struggling to help your teenager get better sleep? Is it any wonder they walk around looking like a zombie? In the bedrooms of many teens, you’ll find a computer, cell phone, ipod, and television and if your teen doesn’t have all these things, it’s likely that they have a few of these high tech items to keep them satisfied. But, did you know that all of these devices have also been found to affect the amount of quality sleep that adults can get? Here’s something to consider: if you can’t get the sleep you need with these things in your room, how can your teen?
You should know that there are ways that you can help your teenager get better sleep each and every night so they can be rested and healthy and maybe, a little less crabby.
Teenagers Have More Stress Than Adults
About the time your child becomes a teenager, you will find that they are suddenly bogged down with all types of anxiety and stress. School, popularity, friends and jobs combine with the struggles that each kid faces every day and conflicts with family to add up to big anxiety and stress problems for many kids, so is it any surprise that your teenager isn’t sleeping well? It’s up to you as their parent to help them to deal with their stress and many times, this means encouraging them to talk to you to get their feelings off themselves. If they cannot talk to you, encourage your teenager to keep a journal. Writing down what bothers them will provide a feeling of putting aside the anxieties and stressors and help your teenager to get better sleep.
Teach your teenager to relax in a healthy, happy way. Bubble baths are great and if your child doesn’t get enough exercise, find ways to help them to get the exercise they need to get the stress relief they seek. Encourage your teenager to meditate, practice feeling grateful and do yoga periodically to help relieve tension in the body that can build up.
Encourage A Healthier Overall Diet
When teenagers are out and about, they are twice as likely to eat fast and fatty foods than if they were to eat at home, but let’s face it; most teenagers are never home. So, it’s up to you to make sure that your child knows the importance of eating healthy. Tell them that if they must stop at fast food place for a bite to eat, they should consider things such as salads or a kid’s meal that can fulfill them without causing them to feel bad later. Often, teenagers will not feel good as a result of the foods they eat and this can affect their sleep. Tell your kids about how eating fast food all the time can cause their systems to go haywire and that’s going to cause them to sleep poorly.
It’s also a good idea to make sure that your kids are home for dinner most of the time so they can eat some healthy meals every now and then. This will help to keep your kids from suffering from poor nutrition and can help them to get better sleep.
When you are working to help your teenager to get better sleep, like with little ones, it’s important that your kids have a stable home life and it’s up to you to make sure that they spend time at home with their family. This is time that kids need to “decompress” and be themselves. This time that they spend just hanging out at home can be amazingly effective in helping your teenager get better sleep.
