What Causes Snoring and What Can You Do?
We have all heard someone snore, but why do they do it? Snoring is defined as being a coarse sound that is made as a result of the vibrations of the soft palate and other tissues in the mouth, nose and throat.
Snoring is a very common sleep problem among both men, women and children, although it is much more common in men. Snoring is caused by a partial blockage, a blockage that may be located anywhere from the tip of the nose to the vocal chords.
What Causes Your Snoring?
As for causes, there are actually quite a few. The more narrowed your airway, the more forceful airflow becomes. When you are sleeping your palate relaxes, which is why you only snore when you are sleeping and not when you are awake. (Although some people do make unusual noises when they are awake!)
Your mouth anatomy has a major part in whether you will snore or not, as people who have a low, thick soft palate or enlarged tonsils will be much more likely to than those who do not.
Alcohol consumption is another major cause of this condition, especially if you drink too much alcohol right before going to bed.
